What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is questioned it transmits an encoded signal with an eight-digit code. This signal is called an SQUAWK code and it is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit a specific message to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to inform controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are frequently utilized to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to communicate via radio. They are essential for safe flying.

Each aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar interrogation by displaying an identifier. This allows ATC to locate an aircraft in a crowd of screens. Transponders can be programmed to respond in various ways when asked. Mode A transmits the code only and mode C provides information about altitude. Mode S transponders give more specific information including call signs and position that can be helpful in airspace that is crowded.

VIN Numbers

The tenth to seventeenth digits may also contain additional information like features or options installed inside the vehicle.

The six digits that make up the VIN code form a sequential serial number that uniquely identifies the car or truck. The final digit is also the check digit and the rest of the numbers are transliterated to numbers. For example the first digit receives a value of eight; the next digits increase by one until it reaches nine at seventh digit. Then, it changes to two. Then, the whole VIN is transformed back into its original form by multiplying the weight of each digit by 11. If the result is same as the check number then the VIN will be valid.

Data Transfer

A data transfer is the process of moving information from one location to another.
